If Evan York keeps hiding from the world behind his laptop he might miss out on something special.
Will he find the courage?
EVAN YORK rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the tension tighten his muscles.
“You’re deaf?” He had no problem reading the man’s lips when he stared at him, confused. “You can’t hear? At all.”
Evan nodded, and held out his phone so the man could read the next message he typed.
“Since I was a kid.”
Evan York watched the man who he’d supposedly been on a blind date with, walk off without another word. He looked at his phone again. His new record for a getting ditched by a Hearing person on a date: five minutes and thirty-seven seconds. He sighed, slid his phone back into his jeans pocket, and gestured at the bartender for another beer. He really should have known better than to let his best friend and confidant from childhood set him up again.
His phone buzzed with a text.
“What up, stud. How’s the date?”
Evan took a drink of his beer and sighed.
“Date sucks balls. And not in the good way.” He texted.
“Unnecessarily descriptive but festive.” Zoey replied.
Zoey Diaz, all five feet of feisty female, had been his friend since he was nine. When a nasty bout of meningitis had stolen his hearing, he’d been angry and withdrawn. They’d first met when his well-meaning parents had started bringing him to events in the local Deaf community as an attempt to be social. He always hung off to the side, watching adults and kids interact. Evan stared with bored disinterest as he watched their whole bodies moving while they signed furiously. Then, Evan had just rolled his eyes, and sighed with the dramatics of a kid who thought he knew everything. The doctor said that there was a possibility of his hearing returning. He didn’t need to learn this signing stuff, right?
When the slim, dark haired girl with expressive eyes had wandered over, he’d sat up straight. For months people had tried to interact with Evan, and he’d stubbornly refused. But she somehow got through when she’d stood in front of him; meeting his gaze directly even as he’d ignored her rudely. When he’d raised his head again, defiantly this time, he expected her to have moved on like everyone else. He’d been surprised. She glared at him as her fingers flew quickly, leaving Evan confused. When he continued to stare at her blankly, she wandered over to a woman who he assumed was her mom and tugged a notepad and paper out of her purse.
“You don’t know how to sign?” She’d cocked her head in curiosity, holding up the pad so Evan could read her spidery writing.
Evan shook his head no.
“Why not?” she wrote.
“Doc says my hearing could come back anytime.”
At his written words, her eyebrow rose. She’d been the only person who didn’t give him the sympathetic scrunchy face. Instead of cooing about how sorry she was, or staring uncomfortably, she narrowed her eyes and scribbled again.
“Being Deaf is the same as being blond or tall or fat.”
Confused, Evan cocked his head to the side.
“It’s just something you are.”
